ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Mondi Shanduka Newsprint is committed to the upliftment and development of our rural and urban stakeholder communities.

We are involved with twenty six rural communities in the KZN Midlands of South Africa. Projects undertaken with these communities in partnership with initiatives such as ‘Working for Water’, ‘Working for Wetlands’, the Dept. of Agriculture and EZEMVELO KZN Wildlife – include alien plant removal and wetland rehabilitation contracts; access to natural resources required for craftwork, grazing, building materials and provision of firewood.

In addition, Mondi Shanduka Newsprint undertakes the facilitation of educational programmes embracing Safety; HIV / AIDS; Peer Education; Environmental Impacts and information concerning fire.

Other projects include our participation with the Endangered Wildlife Trusts, Working Groups, to monitor and manage the habitat requirements of the critically endangered Wattled Crane, Oribi, and Blue Swallow species, all of which are found on our property.

Mondi Shanduka Newsprint is also actively involved with Birdlife S.A. in the monitoring and management of indigenous forests for the endangered Cape Parrot.

Mondi Shanduka Newsprint has two registered Natural Heritage Sites – with a third awaiting registration. We have five “Sites of Conservation Significance’ registered with EZEMVELO KZN Wildlife, as well as several internally recorded sites, requiring special management, of historical, palaeontological and archaeological importance.

Our ‘Multiple Resource Utilization’ programme accommodates the needs of many stakeholder and special interest groups – by providing facilities and opportunities for fishing, birding, hiking, wildlife viewing and utilization, plus three well-appointed accommodation facilities.
