OUR PLANTATIONS - THESOURCE OF OUR PULP

Mondi Shanduka Newsprint manages 50 000 ha. of land, of which 30 000 ha. is planted to commercial trees. Much of the remaining land, such as wetlands, riparian zones, grasslands and indigenous forest patches, is managed and carefully monitored to ensure a responsible approach to ecosystem management.

Concerning our drive towards responsible resource utilization, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation process has certified all our plantations. Certification encompasses an independent, annual assessment of an operation’s plantation management practice, to measure compliance with a range of internationally recognised social, economic and environmental standards.

Mondi Shanduka Newsprint has FSC chain-of-custody certification for our newsprint and telephone directory paper. Our consumers can be assured that our products originate from plantations and are well managed and sustainable.

RECYCLED FIBRE

Mondi Shanduka Newsprint has a highly sophisticated recycled fibre (RCF) de-inking plant which supplies RCF for newsprint production.

In line with our drive for sustainable development, our recycled Fibre Plant (including de-inking) processes approximately 75 000 tons of waste paper annually. Our newsprint brands contain 25%-30% recycled fibre.

Waste Paper is collected in all centres of the country via Paper Pick-Up programmes. These are in co-ordination with diverse community-based suppliers and are sorted for recycling by our own in-house company.

The effects of recycling are wide. Every ton of paper that is recycled saves 3 cubic metres of landfill space. Similarly, 40% less energy is required to manufacture paper from recovered fibre as compared to paper manufactured from virgin fibre. As we improve our recycled paper collection, we literally reclaim value for our economy, by creating much needed employment opportunities for our communities.

VIRGIN FIBRE

Our Thermo Mechanical Pulp (TMP) has four 150tons/day double revolving disc refiner lines. This produces pulp stock for our Mondi Newsprint and telephone directory brands. The TMP pulp feeding these two paper machines (PM4 and PM5) is blended with 25% recycled fibre during the manufacturing process.

Lastly, as indicated above, we utilise recycled fibre along with our own pulping (TMP), to ensure a well formed sheet with good printability, runability and a porosity which suits specific printer needs.
