CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Stringent environmental controls are set for all procurements and waste products, whether these are gas, liquid or solid. Our environmental management system has ISO 14001 accreditation and is regularly audited.
WATER
We are a large consumer of reclaimed water. Our water is recycled effluent from the city council. Over the last few years the total water consumption and specific water consumption per ton of saleable paper has been reduced as a result of technological improvements.

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING
We recognise the importance of recycling and using resources efficiently.
All liquid waste goes into the effluent drainage system, where solids are removed in clarifiers before the effluent is sent to Metro Wastewater. In addition, all effluent quality is closely monitored by Metro Wastewater and meets all their requirements.
Solid waste is disposed of at appropriate landfill sites approved by the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry (DWAF). One of the main objectives of the Waste Management Program is to reduce the volume of waste going to landfill by the efficient use of resources and recycling.
EMISSIONS TO ATMOSPHERE
Reduction in emissions to the atmosphere is one of the objectives of the mill’s Environmental Management Systems. The process seeks to continually reduce gas and particulate emissions from the boilers and the mill.
All installations are consistent with the multi-point plan to improve air quality for south Durban.
EFFLUENT VOLUMES AND QUALITY
Due to the reduction in water consumption, the volume of effluent generated has decreased. The quality of effluent discharge shows a continuous improvement trend. The effluent is tested by the CSIR for heavy metals and toxicity. Results indicate that the heavy metal content of the effluent is well below the legal requirements.
